Real-life results
Gareth Lewis grew up in the English countryside where he fell in love with nature. The landscape architect immigrated to Sweden 20 years ago and came up with the idea of transforming asphalt school playgrounds into the kinds of environments that would help children “get in touch with nature” and encourage healthy eating and physical activity.

Kraft’s donation enabled Lewis to create the four-part Get Moving course he teaches at schools in neighborhoods near Kraft plants. Lewis and others visit the schools to teach the importance of balanced diets and exercise. Then they have the children evaluate their playgrounds. Finally, students make simple changes to their schoolyards, like starting a garden or planting trees.

"Schoolyards are not real places for exercise or resources for outside learning. Where are nature, waterfalls and gardens on the schoolyard? Get Moving creates a very structured process for changing that environment."
