What is Sustainability?

Sustainability has been defined by the United Nations as:

“Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Simply put, it’s the intersection of social, environmental and economic responsibility.

Packaging Story

"Less Energy and Materials Used in Production, Shipping and Distribution to the Consumer."

Sustainability effort: We changed the packaging on all varieties of our Milka 100 g chocolate tablets, switching from an aluminum foil wrap in a paper sleeve to a single layer of packaging. This innovative change also provided consumers with benefits, like making it easier to open and reseal packages.

Location: Europe

Making a Difference for the Environment

Changing the packaging for Milka led to significant reductions in packaging needing to be disposed of.

Real-Life Results

The change in Milka packaging and future changes to other Kraft chocolate bars around the world will create a 58 percent reduction in their primary packaging. These kinds of changes help the environment by using less paper and aluminum foil while creating less packaging for disposal.

"In projects such as these, optimizing our packaging design and materials has a positive effect on the environment for the entire life of the product - it means less energy and materials are used in production, shipping and distribution to the end consumer, while protecting the product and providing consumer preferred convenience."
