Roberval, Quebec Wins Kraft Hockeyville 2008

Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres to play at local arena, community receives $100,000 towards arena upgrades

April 9, 2008 - The votes are in and Canada has spoken! Roberval, Quebec, has been selected as the most spirited hockey community north of the 49th parallel and the winner of Kraft Hockeyville 2008. Canadians have watched in anticipation as the top five communities were revealed each week on CBC’s HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA. Now Roberval can enjoy the title as the third Kraft Hockeyville victor, joining previous winners Salmon River, NS and North Bay, ON.

As part of the Kraft Hockeyville 2008 Grand Prize, Roberval will play host to the Montreal Canadiens and the Buffalo Sabres for a 2008/2009 pre-season NHL game on Tuesday, September 23. The game will be broadcast on CBC during a one hour Kraft Hockeyville special on September 27*. Roberval also receives $100,000 towards arena upgrades from Kraft Canada. The four runner-up communities Port aux Basques, NL, Kingsville, ON, Wilcox, SK, Pilot Mound, MN, also receive $20,000 towards arena upgrades from Kraft.

“We are very excited to crown Roberval as the winner of Kraft Hockeyville 2008,”said Dino Bianco, President, Kraft Canada. “The true spirit of this competition is having the community unite around their common love of hockey and Roberval did a fantastic job. We also congratulate the other four finalists and hope to have even more communities participate next year.”

"Kraft Hockeyville's success over the first two seasons has shown the passion that Canadians have for their communities, the game and the NHL," said Gary Bettman, NHL Commissioner. "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to once again showcase our great players and exciting NHL experience in one of Canada's most passionate hockey communities, and congratulate all who participated in Kraft Hockeyville 2008."

“We applaud the efforts of each of the participating Canadian communities and congratulate Roberval on being named Kraft Hockeyville 2008,” said Paul Kelly, NHLPA Executive Director. “Kraft Hockeyville has provided many NHLPA members with the opportunity to return to their roots by playing in front of a small passionate crowd in a community arena. This year’s game in Roberval will be no exception, generating excitement for the residents and players alike.”

"The Montreal Canadiens are very proud that a Quebec community has been voted on as the winner of the Kraft Hockeyville competition giving Roberval a unique opportunity to host an NHL game," said Pierre Boivin, President, Club de hockey Canadien and Bell Centre. "The selection of Roberval is a tribute to the citizens of that region and clearly demonstrates the passion and the love Quebecers have for our game. Furthermore, as the game against the Buffalo Sabres scheduled for September 2008 will be played on the eve of our 100th anniversary, it provides the Canadiens with an excellent opportunity to expand our Centennial celebrations further. We look forward to playing in Roberval."

"The Buffalo Sabres are honoured to have been chosen to play in the Kraft Hockeyville game in Roberval next September," said Larry Quinn, Managing Partner of the Buffalo Sabres. "The Sabres and Canadiens have a rich history competing against one-another on the ice and this game will add to the tradition."
