Survey Reveals "Who's the Boss" in Today's Households
GLENVIEW, IL (August 30, 2006) - Who's the "boss" in your family? According to a national study by Opinion Research Corporation and Kraft Foods, an identical proportion (53 percent) of men and women named themselves as the boss in their household. Additionally, 23 percent of women considered the man in their life to be the boss, while 19 percent of men looked to the women as the leader.
And, just what responsibilities does the typical "boss" have in today's household? Having a key role in decision-making and handling the financials for the family are ranked highest by 63 percent and 61 percent, respectively, of the 1,099 adults (18 years and older) surveyed. More women than men think making meals and taking care of the children rank high on the list for the "boss" in the household. Nearly half of women, compared to one third of men surveyed, think of women, compared to 19 percent of the men, rate taking care of the kids as a part of that role.
With the school year upon us, adults are playing the lead role when it comes to packing school lunches for children, but kids are helping out too. Sixteen percent of respondents said that "brown bagging it" is a team effort between parent and child.
Since adults tend to be the boss (only two percent said that their kids rule the roost), Kraft Handi-Snacks Baskin-Robbins Puddings is giving kids the opportunity to "Be the Big Boss." Now children ages 8 to 14 will have the chance to see what it's like to be the "boss" for a day through a national contest kicking off September 1, 2006. The write-in contest will award six grand prize winners with an opportunity to serve as an honorary Baskin-Robbins manager at a party for 25 of their special guests. Each winner also will receive a special Handi-Snacks Baskin-Robbins prize pack to share with their friends. Additionally, sixty first prize winners will be awarded Handi-Snacks lunch bags and coupons for free Handi-Snacks and Baskin-Robbins products.
