Improving the Environment, Improving Lives
The environmental, social and economic factors of sustainability are deeply linked. By working with our partners at Rainforest Alliance we are helping coffee farmers find better, more environmentally-friendly ways to grow coffee, helping build decent incomes for farmers, building a source of sustainably-farmed quality coffee for Kraft and improving local ecosystems. When we find ways to use less packaging, we can cut greenhouse gas emissions, use less energy, reduce waste going to landfills and save money. All of these changes have positive impacts, locally and globally.
To help prioritize our sustainability activities, we are focusing on six areas where we can have the greatest impact and that have the greatest impact on our business: agricultural commodities, packaging, energy, water, waste and transportation & distribution.
We have created a framework that builds sustainability into the beginning or design of a project. We are including sustainability in our processes, creating sustainability tools for employees and putting systems in place to measure and reward improvement. We are also continually improving our efforts throughout our entire system - from farm to fork.
Agricultural Commodities
Sustainable Agriculture: Good for Our Planet, for Farmers and for Business
Promoting sustainability in our agricultural supply base ensures that we have high quality raw materials, while at the same time protecting and improving the environment and the social and economic conditions of local communities. Our initial efforts have been focused on developing countries in Africa, Latin America and South Asia where many of our most important raw materials, such as coffee and cocoa, are grown.
Partnering with Non-Governmental Organizations and Others for Change
We are working to help create positive change for the environment, farmers, their families and workers. These improvements don't happen overnight and we are continuing to work with our many valued partners, like Rainforest Alliance, to make this happen.
Packaging
Doing More with Less
Packaging can have a big impact on the environment, from the manufacturing of packaging, to delivering products to stores and disposing of them into landfills. New tools are helping us design packaging that is better for the environment. We are creating packaging that uses less material, weighs less and reduces impact on landfills – without compromising food safety or freshness.
Energy
Using Less Energy, Finding New and Better Sources
Carbon emissions caused by burning fuel of all kinds is impacting our environment in detrimental ways. As part of our plan to reduce our "carbon footprint," we are improving our energy efficiencies, using less energy and finding new and cleaner sources of energy.
Water
Using Less Water, Treating and Reusing it in Better Ways
In many parts of the world, clean water is a treasured commodity, just as it is for us in the making of our products. We look for opportunities to reduce our water use, minimize the impact of water discharge and even reuse water in ways that help our environment and save money.
Waste
Making Less Waste, Putting Waste to Work
Reducing waste means healthier eco-systems and reduced carbon emissions. We're not only focusing on creating less waste in the manufacturing process, we're also finding new and better ways to reuse, treat and even put waste to work.
Transportation and Distribution
Reducing Distances Traveled, Cutting Fuel Usage, Boosting Efficiencies
For a company our size, moving our products is no small task. We've made big strides in reducing the amount of fuel we use by cutting down on the distances our fleet travels, partnering with governmental agencies and applying new technologies – all with the goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
